Why do Trail Maintenance?
The DTS constituting declaration identifies the heart of the matter: mountain biking is a priviledge. To maintain access to the fantastic public resources in our area, the DTS embrace riding and behaving according to the Rules of the Trail. We also hold true that patrons of trails on public lands have a moral obligation to give something back - something to help maintain these trails. This is crucial to the long term accesibility for all trail users groups. Sweat Equity (volunteer maintenance) establishes our group as dedicated to the successful, sustainable development and maintenance of outdoor recreational oppurtunities.
For example, anyone can do simple, but important trail maintenance activities - such as trimming trail corridors - any time. See how to join our Adopt-A-Trail Program!
DTS coordinates volunteer work parties on a regular frequency for Fair Hill Natural Resources Area, Middle Run Natural Area, White Clay Creek State park and Iron Hill.
Check the schedules below and come prepared: bring work gloves and wear sturdy shoes, contact the sponsor for additional details on what tools to bring and what the project may be. An e-mail messege is typically sent in the week before the party to our yahoo group.
The DTS often assist local park officials in organizing more substantial trail maintenance parties. Activites such as building bridges, rerouting trails, and building new trails must only be done with the permission of the land managers and in accordance with sustainable trail building and maintenance methods.
Many DTS members are also invloved in other local trail stewardship organizations. We have lent able bodies and many man-hours to good projects as part of our advocacy efforts.
