Maryland State parks has local paid trail crews in several parks designated as “Trail Parks”. Most parks also have an inventory of tools for volunteers to use. Volunteers are used to perform trail maintenance to augment the state park crews. Maryland prefers to utilize their own tools in their parks. Maryland “qualifies” regular volunteers to operate equipment and also loans equipment between parks and state forest locations. Occasional volunteers use hand tools to support the paid trail crews and Regular Volunteers. Most parks also have a Volunteer Ranger/Volunteer Bike Patrol program to encourage the development of Regular Volunteers. This program requires a 100-hour per year volunteer commitment.
